Palace Denies Prince Andrew Sex Claims

Buckingham Palace has issued a strongly worded denial of allegations that Prince Andrew was involved in "impropriety with underage minors".

The statement was released after the Duke of York was named in a US lawsuit.

The woman who has made the allegations claims the disgraced US banker Jeffrey Epstein loaned her out to his friends, including Prince Andrew.

Papers filed by her lawyers say she was held as a "sex slave" by Epstein from 1999 through 2002 after he "became enamoured" with her.

In the motion filed in a court in Florida, she claims she was "forced to have sexual relations with this prince when she was a minor" in London, New York and on a private Caribbean island. She is believed to have been 17 at the time - underage according to US law.

The document continues: "Epstein instructed Jane Doe #3 that she was to give the Prince whatever he demanded and required Jane Doe #3 to report back to him on the details of the sexual abuse."

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous and is referred to as Jane Doe 3 in documents, says Epstein, who has been jailed for having sex with a 14-year-old, forced her to have sexual encounters against her will between 1999 and 2002.

In the papers, she claims she was effectively recruited for Epstein's use by Ghislaine Maxwell, the daughter of the late media tycoon Robert Maxwell, when she was 15 years old.

And it is claimed in the court document that Ms Maxwell "was one of the main women whom Epstein used to procure under-aged girls for sexual activities".

The document also claims Epstein's "purposes in 'lending' Jane Doe to such powerful people were to ingratiate himself with them for business, personal, political and financial gain, as well as to obtain potential blackmail information".

Buckingham Palace said: "This relates to long-standing and ongoing civil proceedings in the United States, to which the Duke of York is not a party. As such we would not comment in detail. However, for the avoidance of doubt, any suggestion of impropriety with underage minors is categorically untrue."

Prince Andrew's friendship with Epstein is well-documented and in an interview in 2011 he denied any sexual contact with any of the young women connected to the multi-millionaire banker.

Sky News Correspondent Rhiannon Mills said: "It's important to point out that we have in the past seen Prince Andrew criticised for spending time with Epstein, including in December 2010 after he was released from prison."

Epstein was jailed in 2008 and spent 13 months in jail after admitting to having sex with a 14-year-old.

He had been investigated for paying underage girls to have sex with him at his luxury Palm Beach home - and 40 women had come forward as victims.

However, he cut a deal with federal prosecutors and the charges were not progressed.

Two of his victims have now brought a case against the prosecutors claiming their rights were violated because they were not consulted on the secret deal.

Jane Doe 3 has applied to the court to be included in the lawsuit against the federal prosecutor and it is in the legal document to join the case that she makes the allegations against the Duke of York.

Sky News has attempted to reach Ms Maxwell for a response to the latest allegations.

When claims about the nature of her relationship with Epstein were reported in 2011, her lawyers issued a statement describing them as "entirely false".

'Big Objects Found' In AirAsia Plane Search

Two "large objects" have been spotted in the Java Sea around 90ft (30m) underwater, says the man leading the hunt for the AirAsia plane that crashed six days ago.

Fransiskus Bambang Soelistyo, chief of Indonesia's Search and Rescue Agency, told reporters: "I'm confident this is part of the AirAsia plane."

He said the agency was trying to get images of the objects for confirmation using remotely operated underwater vehicles, but high waves and strong currents were hampering efforts.

One of the objects measured at 31ft by 15ft (9.4m by 4.8m), Mr Soelistyo said. The second, found nearby, was 24ft (7.2m) by 20ins (0.5m).

Flight QZ8501 disappeared from radar screens over the Java Sea while en route from Indonesia's second-biggest city Surabaya to Singapore with 162 people on board.

So far, the bodies of 30 victims have been recovered from the sea. No survivors have been found.

Some of the bodies were discovered still strapped into their aircraft seats, officials involved in the search said.

Among the victims recovered were two children, according to reports. Only four have been identified and their bodies returned to their families.

There are now 65 ships, 14 planes and 19 helicopters involved in the search and rescue mission.

The Singaporean defence minister Ng Eng Hen posted pictures of window panels recovered from the sea on his Facebook page on Friday morning.

He wrote: "RSS Supreme recovered a piece of an aircraft this morning, likely to be a window panel. They have informed the Indonesian search authorities and will be handing over the item."

Sonar equipment and metal detectors are being used to try to discover the black box, which will help investigators establish what caused the plane to smash into the sea.

Bad weather is known to have contributed to the disaster, which came half way through the short haul flight.

The pilot had asked air traffic control for permission to climb the Airbus A320 to a higher altitude to avoid storm clouds but heavy air traffic meant this request was denied.

The black box data recorder contains crucial information such as engine temperature, vertical and horizontal speed.

The search team is also hunting for the voice recorder, which will have captured conversations between the pilot and others in the cockpit.

Mr Soelistyo estimated the fuselage would be lying at a depth of between 80ft-100ft (25m and 30m)

The victims identified and returned to their families are Hayati Lutfiah Hamid, flight attendant Khairunisa Haidar Fauzi and passengers Kevin Alexander Soetjipto and Grayson Herbert Linaksita.

Rapist Ched Evans 'Deserves Second Chance'

Former Sheffield United and Wales striker Ched Evans has been offered a route back into football - in Malta.

The 26-year-old convicted rapist had an offer to train with League One United withdrawn in November following strong local opposition.

Other English clubs including Tranmere and Oldham have also rejected the chance to sign him.

However, Maltese side Hibernians FC, who are top of the country's domestic league, say they have made an offer to Evans for the remainder of the season.

Club vice-president Stephen Vaughan, the controversial former Chester City owner who was disqualified from acting as a company director for 11 years in 2009 for his involvement in an alleged £500,000 VAT fraud and was jailed in 2011 for attacking a police officer, said: "We are looking to secure the services of a top striker and Ched fits the bill.

"We've spoken to his agent and have offered a deal from now until the end of the season."

The technical director Hibernians FC, Jeffrey Farrugia, told Sky News Evans' rape conviction would not be a problem for the club.

"He paid for what he did so for us it is not an issue," he said.

"We'll open the doors for him to come over here and start his career again in international football."

Mr Farrugia, who described Evans as a "glorious player", said it would be a great opportunity for him to showcase his skills.

"It will be good for him to come to Malta and pay at least 26 games," he said. "Many clubs I am sure will go for him."

And Malta's Justice Minister, Owen Bonnici, has intervened in the controversy, tweeting: "Ched Evans should be given a second chance.

"If we believe in rehabilitation of ex-prisoners we should practice what we preach."

Evans is keen to resume his playing career after being released from prison in October.

He served two-and-a-half years of a five-year sentence after being found guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman in 2011. He claimed she had agreed to have sex.

He was initially given permission by Sheffield United to train with them at the request of players' union, the Professional Footballers Association.

But following a backlash from supporters, sponsors and patrons, including Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill, the club changed their mind.

Ennis-Hill, who comes from Sheffield and has a stand named after her, said: "I believe being a role model to young people is a huge honour and those in positions of influence should respect the role they play in young people's lives.

"If Evans was to be re-signed by the club it would completely contradict these beliefs."

36 Killed In New Year's Stampede In China

Thirty-six people have been killed in a stampede at a New Year's event in Shanghai, city officials have said.

A statement from the Shanghai government confirmed another 43 people were injured in the chaos.

The stampede happened at the city's riverfront Bund area, which is usually jammed with spectators for major events, at 11.35pm (local time), according to the Xinhua news agency.

Photographs on Weibo, the Chinese version of Twitter, show one person doing chest compressions on a shirtless individual, while other people lay on the ground nearby.

Another image shows the area ringed by police.

It was not immediately clear what triggered the stampede, but state media and a witness said the incident was caused when people tried picking up fake money thrown from a building.

A man who brought one of the injured to a local hospital for treatment said fake money had been thrown down from a bar above the street as part of a New Year's celebration.

People rushed to pick up the money, triggering the stampede, said the man, who declined to be identified.

Angry family members clashed with security guards at a hospital where some of the victims were taken.

Authorities had shown some concern about crowd control in the days leading up to New Year's Eve.

They had cancelled an annual 3D laser show on the Bund that last year attracted around 300,000 people.

The historic riverfront strip runs along an area of narrow streets surrounded by restored old buildings, shops and tourist attractions.

Millions Across UK Welcome 2015 With A Bang

Millions of people around the UK have celebrated the arrival of 2015, including with spectacular fireworks displays in London and Edinburgh.

In the capital, hundreds of thousands of people lined the River Thames for an 11-minute display timed to the midnight bongs of Big Ben.

The show featured a commemoration of the WW1 centenary, with bursts of red fireworks representing poppies and the world's highest ever New Year countdown beamed from the 87-storey Shard.

Tickets were introduced for the first time for the event on the South Bank, with numbers kept to 100,000.

They were first made available to the public in September, with a staggered release to ensure multiple opportunities to secure a place on the night.

The scheme was brought in following consultation with the Metropolitan Police, emergency services, and local authorities, to help manage crowd numbers which have been growing each year - with 500,000 flooding the streets last year.

London mayor Boris Johnson said on Twitter: "London's dazzling fireworks were a wonderful way to welcome in the new year. Thanks to all who made it such a safe & fun event."

Emergency services braced themselves for a busy night, with London Ambulance Service expecting up to 600 calls an hour, operations director Jason Killens said on Twitter.

He said: "Over 100 emergency calls in the first 15 minutes since midnight - its getting busy this London NYE."

Scotland Yard said officers had made 54 arrests by around 2am, with the majority for alcohol-related offences, while Greater Manchester Police said nine people had been arrested at the city's main New Year event.

Up to 75,000 revellers packed into Edinburgh's streets for Hogmanay, one of Europe's biggest New Year's celebrations.

Lily Allen was the headline act at the Concert In The Gardens, with Soul II Soul and Twin Atlantic among acts performing on five live stages throughout the city.

Wilson Peery, 33, from Oregon, USA, travelled to Scotland especially to attend Edinburgh's street party.

He said: "I came here in 2008 and made a split second decision to come back this year with a group of friends. We all just decided to come.

Retrial Ordered For Al Jazeera Journalists

Three Al Jazeera journalists jailed in Egypt are to face a retrial.

The decision, which was made by an appeals court after a hearing lasting a few minutes, has given families of the men fresh hope that they might be freed.

However, there were mixed emotions among relatives at Egypt's Court of Cassation after the trio were denied bail.

Canadian-Egyptian Mohamed Fahmy, Australian Peter Greste and Egyptian Baher Mohamed have been held since December 2013 in a case that has provoked an international outcry and widespread calls for their freedom.

The arrests followed the ousting of Egypt's Islamist President Mohamed Morsi and their original trial was dismissed as a sham by rights groups.

Fahmy and Greste each received a seven-year prison sentence, while Mohamed got 10 years.

Egyptian authorities had accused the Qatar-based Al Jazeera of acting as a mouthpiece for the Muslim Brotherhood, which had swept to power after the country's 2011 revolution.

Marwa Omara, the fiancee of Mohamed Fahmy, told Sky News the families were disappointed that the journalists had not been released before the retrial gets under way.

She said her fiance was in poor health with hepatitis B, but is in "high spirits".

"He's just a journalist who was doing his job," she said.

"They were accused of being members of the Muslim Brotherhood, fabricating news and harming national security, and calling for a civil war in Egypt.

"All these accusations are faulty and there is no evidence whatsoever - we don't understand why they are in prison."

Greste's mother, Lois, said: "We need some time to process. It's not as positive as we had hoped."

Defence lawyer Negad Al-Borai said after Thursday morning's hearing that he hoped for a "happy end" to the case. There has been speculation that President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi could pardon or deport the men.

Sherine Tadros, Sky News' Middle East Correspondent, said a date for the retrial has not been set, but that lawyers could make a further request for bail on its first day.

She said: "There's another opportunity that they could be freed and wouldn't have to spend the next trial behind bars, but because these are very serious charges - belonging to a terrorist organisation is essentially what they're charged with - it's unlikely that this would be granted."

AirAsia Victims: Stewardess Was Living Her Dream

The father of one of the stewardesses on doomed AirAsia Flight QZ8501 has said his "beautiful and smart" daughter was living her dream working for the airline.

Khairunnisa Haidar, known as Nisa, was of the crew on the plane which crashed into the Java Sea on its way from Indonesia to Singapore.

The 22-year-old studied law but is said to have had a change of heart and decided to pursue a career as a flight attendant.

"From the start, we already knew the risks associated with being a stewardess," said her father, Haidar Fauzie.

"She is beautiful and smart. It has always been her dream to fly. We couldn't have stopped her."

Mr Fauzie said he and his wife last saw Nisa six weeks ago when she returned home for a holiday.

One of her most recent Instagram posts is a note pinned to the window of a plane. It reads: "I Love You From 38,000ft".

Coffins of some of the victims have started arriving back in Indonesia but authorities have not named the flight attendant whose body was spotted in the sea.

Details about other members of the crew have also started to emerge.

Oscar Desano, from Jakarta, describes himself on Twitter as: "A Flight Attendant and A Sagittarian who needs to see a Shrink immediately!"

His social media accounts are full of pictures of him and his colleagues.

In a 2011 Facebook post he proudly shows off a picture of his name badge and an image of himself in uniform.

The caption reads: "The new Me."

In March, he posted a message of support for another missing plane, asking people to "pray for Malaysia Airlines flight number MH370".

His cousin, Paris Duarte, posted on Twitter on Wednesday that his family were still holding out hope.

"Tonight we'll be praying together in our Duarte Family House for you @ochanky #KeepUpTheFaith #MiracleHappens."

The wife of a pilot from the AirAsia plane - which crashed on Sunday - has also been speaking and vowed to be strong for her children.

The jet disappeared after Captain Irianto, failed to get permission to fly higher to avoid bad weather.

His wife, Widya Sukarti Putri, said: "I must be strong and tough and I'm here for my children and their future, so I must be strong and open with this situation."

His father said of the pilot: "He is a patient man, always trusted Allah, his behaviour towards his parent as well as to the community around him was good."

As well as the crew, the plane was packed with 155 passengers. Here are some of their stories:

:: Ruth Natalia Puspitasari, her fiance, Bob Hartanto Wijaya, and his parents, Marilyn and William Wijaya

Ms Puspitasari, who would have turned 26 on Monday, was on the flight with her fiance and future parents-in-law for a New Year's holiday.

She called her father, Suyanto, just before she boarded, and she told him excitedly that they planned to celebrate her birthday in Singapore.

She and her fiance reportedly met at Petra Christian University in Surabaya, Indonesia - the same town their ill-fated flight had taken off from.

But after graduating, economics student Ms Puspitasari - from East Java - had moved to Guangzhou, China.

Her fiance, who had studied architecture, stayed behind after becoming co-owner of Eka Toys in his hometown of Malang.

The British businessman and his two-year-old daughter were among the passengers.

His Singaporean wife and their other child had travelled back to Singapore on an earlier flight, according to Channel News Asia.

They were all believed to be flying to Singapore for New Year's Eve celebrations with his family.

:: Hermanto Tanus, his partner Indahju Liangsih and their sons Nico Giovanni, 17, and nine-year-old Justin Giovanni

In Singapore, student Chiara Natasya Tanus, 15, had been waiting eagerly for a visit from her parents and brothers.

She had not seen her family, who are from Surabaya, since she left for Singapore to pursue her secondary education two months ago.

She told Malaysia's The Star: "My mum called me on the 23rd and told me she would visit me very soon, but then this happened.

"I was so excited. I was looking forward to showing my dormitory to my family and we were planning for a holiday in Singapore."

:: Nanang Priyo Widodo

Mr Widodo, 43, had only been back in Indonesia for one day after a business trip to Malaysia before he left for another one in Singapore.

He had ridden his motorcycle to get to the airport as quickly as possible.

His wife, Warih Aditya, 33, told the Jakarta Post: "He arrived home two days ago from accompanying tourists to Malaysia. He was at home for one day, then had to go with other clients to Singapore."

:: Florentina Maria Widodo

The 26-year-old school teacher from Hwa Chong Institution in Singapore taught biology was affectionately known to family and friends as Tina.

Ms Widodo and her boyfriend Andy Paul Chen were both from the National University of Singapore, and were members in the university's guitar ensemble.

Ms Widodo reportedly graduated from the National Institute of Education last year.

She sat in the seat next to Mr Widodo, but it is not known whether they were related.

His fiancee Louise Sidharta had been at Singapore's Chani Airport waiting for her future husband to return from a family holiday.

She said: "It was supposed to be their last vacation before we got married."

The couple were reportedly planning to wed next May.

Ebola: NHS Deployments 'Best Way To Protect UK'

Britain's Ebola screening will be reviewed - but the best way to protect the UK from the virus is to send NHS staff to West Africa, the Government's most senior medical adviser has told Sky News.

Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies spoke out after a Scottish nurse was diagnosed with the deadly disease after arriving back from Sierra Leone.

Pauline Cafferkey fell ill hours after she was given the all-clear at Heathrow Airport, despite raising fears about her temperature with officials at the airport.

The public health nurse's experience has prompted questions about the effectiveness of screening measures, with procedures at Heathrow branded "chaotic" by her colleagues.

Asked how the UK's Ebola screening protocols could be improved, Dame Sally told Sky News: "Well clearly the process was not up to what we would like to see.

"It's being reviewed - we review on a rolling basis because it's a new programme.

"But I think when we know significant numbers of healthcare workers are coming into the country we need to have extra staff there and be prepared."

However, she added: "The best way we can protect this country from Ebola is to recognise that these heroes and heroines are going out there, supporting West Africa, to snuff out this epidemic - to get their people well so it doesn't spread here."

Public Health England's Director For Health Protection and Medical Director Paul Cosford confirmed Ms Cafferkey had complained about her temperature but said she was cleared to fly on to Glasgow after repeated tests failed to detect signs of an "unusual" temperature.

Ms Cafferkey was tested seven times altogether - including six times in the space of 30 minutes after raising concerns while waiting for her connecting flight to Scotland.

She took a taxi home from Glasgow Airport but raised the alarm later after developing a fever.

She was initially treated at Glasgow's Gartnavel Hospital before being flown to a specialist unit at the Royal Free Hospital in north London.

Ms Cafferkey is the second Briton to test positive and the first to do so on UK soil after nurse William Pooley, 29, contracted Ebola while volunteering in Sierra Leone in August before getting the all-clear following treatment at the Royal Free.

Dame Sally said she could be given blood plasma donations from Mr Pooley to help her overcome the virus, as the experimental drug ZMapp, which was used to treat him, is not currently available.

Meanwhile, a healthcare worker in Aberdeen who fell ill following her recent return from West Africa has tested negative for the virus, the Scottish Government has confirmed.

The woman was taken ill on Monday while visiting Torridon in the Scottish Highlands and transferred to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where she underwent tests.

A third patient from Cornwall, who also recently returned from an affected country, tested negative at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Treliske, Truro.

At least 40 bodies and wreckage including a plane door and oxygen tanks have been recovered in the search for missing AirAsia Flight QZ8501.

The bodies - which were not wearing life jackets - have been brought on board a navy ship, said Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Director SB Supriyadi.

Local television broadcast pictures of the bodies floating in the sea.

"The warship Bung Tomo has retrieved 40 bodies and the number is growing. They are very busy now," said a navy spokesman.

They were found in the Java Sea about six miles (10km) from where the plane last communicated with air traffic control.

Search chief SB Supriyadi also said an air force Hercules had "found an object described as a shadow at the bottom of the sea in the form of a plane".

Objects spotted earlier have also been confirmed as wreckage from the plane and some have been taken away by helicopter for testing.

AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes said he was rushing to the scene and wrote on Twitter: "My heart is filled with sadness for all the families involved in QZ 8501.

"On behalf of AirAsia my condolences to all. Words cannot express how sorry I am."

The Airbus A320-200 disappeared from radar on Sunday morning, on its way from Surabaya in Indonesia to Singapore.

There were 162 people on board, including one British man, Hull-born Chi Man Choi, and his two-year-old daughter.

The aircraft's last request - to climb higher to avoid a storm - was turned down.

Minutes later it fell off the radar without giving any distress call.

Geoffrey Thomas, editor of AirlineRatings.com, told Sky News: "We have a radar plot which shows the plane actually climbing through 36,300ft - it wasn't given permission to do that.

"It also shows that its speed had decayed by 134mph and dropped dramatically to a level where it couldn't sustain flight."

Some 30 ships and 21 aircraft from South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and Indonesia have been involved in searching 10,000 nautical miles of ocean.
