Rolf Harris 'Disguised Abuse As Bear Hugs'

TV entertainer Rolf Harris used "bear hugs" to disguise his serial sexual abuse, a court has been told.

Harris, who denies 12 charges of indecent assault, is facing questions from prosecutor Sasha Wass QC.

She told the jury that all the alleged victims describe a similar scenario: bear hugs then sexual molestation.

The prosecution claims Harris committed child abuse in conducting an affair with his daughter's best friend, and that he "psychologically dominated that girl".

But the 84-year-old said the relationship was based on a "mutual feeling of warmth and affection".

Ms Wass called Harris a "polished performer with a dark side" and implied he contrived regret in a letter to the alleged victim's father to avoid the police getting involved.

In the letter Harris admitted a sexual relationship but claimed there was no "rape, physical force or brutality". He also wrote that he had "sickened" himself.

Ms Wass questioned the "self-loathing" contained in the letter.

"I suddenly felt that I had betrayed everyone's trust," said Harris.

The 84-year-old told Southwark Crown Court he had worked with the NSPCC on child abuse issues, making a campaign video for them.
