A British woman has died while attempting to swim the English Channel, French authorities have said.
French maritime and coast guard officials say Susan Taylor was north-east of Cape Gris-Nez in Wissant Bay, Pas-de-Calais, when emergency services were alerted.
The 34-year-old from Leicester's support team, who were accompanying her on a 33ft-ship, reportedly radioed authorities requesting a defibrillator.
A French naval helicopter took Ms Taylor to hospital in Boulogne-sur-Mer, where doctors pronounced her dead at 7.15pm on Sunday.
Tributes were left on Ms Taylor's Create A Ripple Channel Swim pageShe had been attempting to raise money for Rainbows Hospice and Diabetes UK through her Facebook page Create A Ripple Channel Swim.
A message posted on the page said: "Whilst attempting to swim the English Channel yesterday my sister, Susan collapsed suddenly in the water. She was immediately recovered from the water and treated on the support boat.
"She was then airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Boulonge. Susan tragically passed away.
"Thank you for your messages of support. If you would like to leave a sign of respect please feel free to donate to her fund raising page."
